McCain's Problem
John Lewis, a congressman and leader in the civil right movement (I've posted a video of him before and mentioned him before), and as you can see from the video one of the people John McCain would rely on... he has some harsh words for McCain today...
"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history," Lewis said in a statement issued today. "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse." You can read more of his statement here
I told you the level of hate being seen and not discouraged at McCain/Palin rallies was bad. McCain twice yesterday had pretty much no choice but to deal with it. I mean for goodness sake a man prefaced a SS question or something with totally unrelated hateful Obama comments. Then some crazy rambling old lady went off on how Obama is one of them Arabs... And McCain grabbed the mic to say no no he's decent or whatever (sorry don't have the quote in front of me). Though I'm not sure saying no no he's decent in reply to He's an Arab calms anything, can no Arab be decent then? Think before you reply, those people you're replying to are nuts. ugh.
Anyway... You reap what you sow. I've been saying for days if you don't speak out about these people's actions it would get out of hand. Now McCain is in a position that he has to say Obama is NOT scary. And he gets booed by his own supporters. Well of course, you guys let them for days yell TERRORIST, KILL HIM, OFF WITH WITH HIS HEAD, etc etc and said nothing. So of course they thought it was ok. Of course they thought Obama was evil and that you agreed. You are leaders, saying nothing is the same as a wink wink nod nod, we agree.
It's good he's finally been forced to say SOMETHING, but it's coming a little late. Hopefully it's enough to start to set a new tone, but given the fact that people were already yelling death threats for days, I'm not sure just clarifying that he's a decent man and not an Arab is gonna be enough. There are reports it's spilling over to state and local election rallies, if people mention Obama, those threatening words get yelled at those events too.
Someone on a news show recently said we haven't seen anything like this, since JFK's picture appeared on papers floating around Dallas with the word treason attached to it.... which sent a chill through me I must say. It's time for this hate to end.
When one of the three people that you said you'd rely one, someone that you clearly admire -- when he says your campaign is fueling the very hatred that earned him his own, very different kinds of battle scars, you need to listen very closely.
