according to an NPR story I heard, the apposition didn't have to do with religion in this case. Even 48% of evangelicals and Catholics are in favor of stem cell research in New Jersey. The anti-stem cell people convinced them all it would raise property taxes, and that scared everyone away.
Wow, really? Well money in this economy is a much fairer reason for voting no at least. Would those anti-stem cell people by chance be out of state religious groups? heh. grrr.
I'm sure it was the religious people, they just took a non-religious tact since they couldn't win the religious way. The economic thing seems thin to me, like 3 cents a person... but watev. I woulda voted for it. :P

In NJ, very little embryonic stem cell research would be taking place anyway. So not much was lost there.

Unlike CA, NJ decided to do almost all umbilical cord blood stem cell research:
