Power was out in our part of LA tonight. Our lights only flickered for a second but didn't go out. Our Starbucks wasn't out so we got coffee - YaY. In the same shopping center the California Pizza Kitchen, theirs was out, so we decided we'll get them tomorrow night when they have power.
Watched Body of Lies . Good thing I like Leo and Brian worked on that movie (we were watching to see if his shots were in it -- they were and to see if he was credited -- he was not but neither was his boss or his company or judging by the visual effects credits probably many others were not so that's just how it goes). Not a horrible movie but eh, not great either. Slow in spots, good in others, and in the end rather anti-climatic.
Then I watched How to Be, which is much more my kind of movie than anything else I've seen in ages. I think they could have done something more with it, but the concept and movie in general was totally my kind of movie. And given the stuff I've seen lately, well yeah... this wins compared to anything else I have seen in awhile. Probably because it's more quirky, not typical Hollywood stuff. Not that typical Hollywood movies are all bad, but if I feel like I've seen it before or it's all blow stuff up, or eh, whatever, 95% of movies I just don't care about. I think I probably have less than a dozen DVDs I care about. Well maybe more but they're sets. I'm a snob. I do plan to see Transformers next and have low expectations. The next good movie I plan to see is Harry Potter -- DUH!
Gave Brian his birthday presents -- Star Trek: Countdown TPB which he asked for. And so he'd have a present he didn't know about / ask for I also gave him Star Trek Ultimate Edition (Star Trek Manga)
, which he oddly enough seemed more happy with. Guess there had been a preview in his last Battle Angel Manga or something. So, win! YaY! It's not like I know how to pick a Star Trek birthday present, but somehow I did!
Me: What's the kiss of death for any tv show?
Brian: Changing its time slot
Me: Guess what they're doing to Smallville come fall
Brian: The kiss of death
Me: It's moving to Friday
Brian: Yeah, this is its last season then.
We so think alike.
If we're wrong, it's only because I don't think CW cares about ratings as much as other networks. They get lower ratings anyway, don't they? They'd probably let it go a couple of years with lower ratings before killing it and I think I read an actor or two signed up for two years. But I doubt it'll make it to two years now. Never ever ever move a show that has been in an established time slow for years and years and years and expect it to survive. I actually don't mind this move, since Thursday = all of the good shows and Friday had nothing. Still my prediction is now on the record, they've just killed whatever chances Smallville had for any future seasons and/or decent ratings even as they were kicking up the JL factor for the geeks.
I said Blago shouldn't appoint anyone to that seat. I said Burris might be a great man but because Blago appointed him too bad I didn't trust the whole thing. And HA! I was right. He's on tape looking like a sleaze bag, Oopsie. His defense? Well yes I was saying I wanted to help the governor raise money and do it in a name other than my own so that it wouldn't look like I was trying to buy the seat, but I didn't DO it. People fund raise for each other all of the time, that's politics and as long as you follow the rules it's legal. What they don't do -- They don't get caught on tape saying I'll do that fund raising in someone else's name because I want this seat that's -- what? Ohh yeah, for sale. Career over. Even if you're not kicked out, you'll never be re-elected, oh wait you weren't elected in the first place.
Oh and while I'm here, will the next person who plans to stage a fake crime say white guys did it? Why is it always black guys being blamed for fake crimes? Or for real crimes that the person who did them wants to blame on someone else. What did you think only blacks commit crimes? That's funny because your white ass is now in jail isn't it? I hope you enjoyed your trip to Disney World while you sent cops on a wild goose chase looking for some poor woman and child who had been taken randomly off their streets.
After seeing what I've seen on my local news since the court ruling it's not a good idea for me to make a post. I need to cool down or any posts I make will just be about the idiots that have been on my tv, they'll be long long long posts. They'll have more foul words than any porno movie could possibly have. I'd like to be more adult than that when I post, believe it or not. But I will say this much for the people who, since the Prop 8 stuff started don't get why it's "so ugly" here when it's not in some other states that have passed similar measures? Consider you're not seeing the local news. I've watched local and national coverage. And there's a reason I'm too angry to write what I'd like to now and it's not what I've seen on national coverage. Let's just say that the people from the Yes campaign are from religious groups and they didn't go to the same church I did growing up, clearly. Then again remember last year I found this website showing I was raised in a cult ;) At least growing up attending a "cult" made me not so hateful, bigoted, ignorant, etc.
Anyway, yeah, I can't even begin to address this issue. So, a quote instead. Now if only I could join in on the discussion in an adult manner right now. I may rant and rant and rant, but even I have my limits...
Bigotry is the disease of ignorance, of morbid minds; enthusiasm of the free and buoyant. Education and free discussion are the antidotes of both. --- Thomas Jefferson
The courts upheld 8 but also said it's not retroactive.
My uncle's marriage remains legal.
Well then we've not the heard the last of this I'm sure.
The yes side will say BUT you can't let those existing marriages stay legal if California doesn't recognize gay marriage. The no side will say that means we're discriminating since we have legal gay marriages but now no longer let gays marry.
I'd still like it explained to me in plain English how it's legally allowed for a state to ban consenting adults from marrying. Does no one in this country understand the different between a legal marriage and a church marriage? As long as we can legally discriminate, can I legally ban fucking morons who don't understand such basic concepts? Can I outlaw them from living in California? That would have saved us a lot of problems.
This is the RED headline on MSNBC's site right now, aka not even a story yet, just a breaking news headliner....
Obama to nominate Sonia Sotomayor to Supreme Court, officials tell the AP
I predict that today's top news will be Republicans tearing her apart because well it's Obama nominating her and he can do no right... even though she was nominated for the US District Court by who? Oh yeah, the first Bush.
Also in about 4 1/2 hours the courts here release the 8 ruling. So it should be a fun news day. Since my current sleep schedule is back to falling asleep at about 8-10 am, I think I'll probably be awake for the 8 ruling even.
*EDIT* It's now 3 hours hours later -- HA I called it, some guy on MSNBC who is the president of one the
groups leading the charge against Sotomayor was just asked what's wrong with
Sotomayor since they're already releasing ads against her -- how do you know she won't follow the law, etc etc. His
answer didn't start with something intelligent like quoting cases he
disagrees with, no... it was just "Obama is appointing her." They
won't like anyone he chooses. She was appointed to the courts by a
Republican. She has one of the longest judicial histories of anyone
in our court system now. They could dissect that. But "Obma is
appointing her." is the main point. At least he's honest. The others won't be so honest in stating their probs with her. Clearly no one prepped him for this appearance.
I realized today that hey, we never did take a picture of my Superman tattoo to show mom, Misi, etc. Now as you may or may not remember it's a coverup of my Ricky tattoo (Mom and Jenn know what I mean). But basically that meant we couldn't go with traditional Superman as the yellow ink is too transparent. It still is with these colours but from a distance it looks good, just up close close like the camera catches it's noticeable. So you really see it here. Brian, when he's next to me, doesn't notice it at all. So thanks to my cell phone having a decent camera for a phone, you're seeing it look more noticeable than Brian sees it when standing with me. There's still a few spots we had to get retouched after the healing too but Brian's schedule is so crazy and it's not as noticeable in person as it is in the picture that we've just never gotten around to it. So even though I don't think this picture does it justice... we only took one. So there you go, for the few who wondered what it'd looked like there's a general idea. It does kind of look different in person, this makes it look like Superman just took on Doomsday though, heh.
We saw Terminator Salvation. I already said I didn't follow the series. Neither Sci-Fi nor Action are my things. Probably the most you'll get from me for either type of movie will be "It was okay" or "It was horrible". With yesterday's viewing of the second Brian got "It was okay" but my only gripe was that age thing... With this movie? Another "It was okay." But the nicest I said was "The actors were good". And before I could even say that much Brian was telling me he was sorry he'd invited me to see this one in the theater as he'd expected much better. So take that for what's it worth. It had one of the worst lines in a movie I've heard in years, not that I go to movies often since I am pretty picky and avoid theaters. Still, c'mon when even *I* could have written a better line and I've never written a story in my life, well... there you go. Still the actors were all pretty good, so there's that.
I told Brian I know enough people who seemed to like that Sarah Connor tv show that I wonder if it is the target of a letter writing campaign big enough to keep it on the air, he said he hoped so if this movie was the current legacy for the Terminator series as he likes that show better than this movie. He also offered to show me the third movie to make up for this. I told him I'd pass for now, maybe later, I'm Terminator'd out. Maybe I'll watch my True Blood: Season One dvds this week instead.
I'd seen one of two of the Terminator movies years and years ago but my memory is crap. So Brian says I should see at least one again before we go see Terminator Salvation. He decided that Terminator 2: Judgment Day is the one to see. We watched it tonight. Parts were familiar so I must have seen it. Ohh and of course I've been on the ride at Universal Studios numerous times, one of those times the motorcycle had broken and stuck in place, which amused us greatly.
Anyway, it's not my genre, etc but I thought it was okay. Still, I had one nitpick and I don't usually nitpick movies at all. Ready for it? Like hell was John Connor ten in Terminator 2. heh. My nephew is nine. No way was that character one year older than my nephew. Twelve I could buy. Ten, not a chance in hell. They totally should have left his age off of the screen of the computer in the beginning and just not mentioned it at all. I spent certain parts of the movie asking Brian, yet again, "Ten?" or saying "No way is that kid ten." hehe. And I never do that stuff when we're watching movies. It was just THAT difficult for me to believe that kid was ten. No problem believing the Terminators. Can watch Harry Potter and be like Ooooh wizards! Vampires and werewolves in movies? Hey no problem. But tell me Edward Furlong is playing a ten year old in that movie, and pfft yeah right, there's only so far that my imagination can stretch. Brian assures me I'm not alone in my nitpick.
Anyway, I think we're gonna try to go see Salvation tonight.
Tuesday is THEE day for the fate of Prop 8. The Court will announce its ruling then.
